Interest rates stay at 0.5 per cent

The Bank of England has just announced that interest rates will be held at 0.5% - the eighth month in a row it has made such a call following six months of huge rate cuts.

Many economists predicted today's decision and now expect that rates could stay at 0.5% well into next year, especially following last week's surprise news that the UK economy is still in recession.
