Quiet village life with the town nearby

Overview

Leycett and Scot Hay are small, semi-rural, former mining villages around four miles west of Newcastle-under-Lyme and less than a five-minute drive to Silverdale. The villages are just a mile apart and are surrounded by Staffordshire countryside. Properties in the village centres are old mining cottages in pretty terraced rows and there are larger properties on the outskirts.

Schools and Colleges

There are three Ofsted-rated 'Good' primary schools in the area; St Luke's Church of England is less than a mile away in Silverdale, Richard Heathcote Community Primary School in Alsager's Bank and St John's Church of England school in nearby Keele. Newcastle Academy, Madeley High School and St John Fisher Catholic College are nearby respected secondary schools, with Newcastle-under-Lyme College offering Further Education provision.

Transport Links

Leycett and Scot Hay are conveniently situated between junctions 15 and 16 of the M6 which takes you to Birmingham in the south and provides links to the major cities of the North West. There is a bus service into Newcastle-under-Lyme bus station which has good local connections.

Stoke-on-Trent railway station is a 20-minute drive, providing services to London and Nottingham in around 90 minutes, and Birmingham and Manchester in under an hour; the Stafford service takes around 20 minutes.

Amenities

While there are no village shops in Leycett or Scot Hay, nearby Silverdale has plenty, including a small supermarket, cafes, restaurants and pubs as well as a library, garden centre and gym, and Newcastle-under-Lyme is well served with great high street shops, restaurants, nightlife and other amenities.

The villages are surrounded by rolling hills and farmland, with nearby award-winning Silverdale Country Park - an 83-hectare open space created on former colliery land, and Apedale Community Country Park, both attracting walkers, cyclists, twitchers and anglers.

In both villages, the cricket clubs are the social hub of the community, established when mining was at its heyday. For golf lovers, Keele Driving Range, Trentham Golf Club and Newcastle-under-Lyme Golf Club are nearby. Nearby Silverdale Athletic Football Club is a lively part of the community providing opportunities for youngsters and adults alike. Newcastle Town Football Club plays at the impressive Aspire Stadium and has strong links in the local community.

Nearby Silverdale Village Surgery offers GP provision and the respected Royal Stoke University Hospital is around five miles away. Silverdale is also home to several churches including St Luke's, Silverdale Elim Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
