'A village within a city'

Overview

Penkhull, just to the east of Newcastle-under-Lyme, calls itself 'a village within a city' owing to the spirit of its residents and its layout - its church and green would not look out of place in a rural setting. There is real sense of community here with lots of regular local events including folk week, Penkhull Jazz and Blues Festival, plays and pantos.

At the centre of Penkhull is the 'Garden Village', built along the lines of the 'Garden City' model of making residential areas more attractive and healthier places to live.

The property market in Penkhull is busy; there are plenty of Victorian terraces, some very attractive larger Victorian villas, flats and apartments. Heywoods is the estate agent of choice in the Penkhull area.

Penkhull is very near the centre of Newcastle-under-Lyme and a short distance from the Royal Stoke University Hospital and the North Staffordshire Medical Institute, making it an ideal location for hospital employees and medical students. The area is also a short drive from Staffordshire University.

Schools and Colleges

There are a number of Ofsted-rated 'Good' primary schools in the area, including The Willows and St John's Church of England schools. St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Primary School is rated 'Outstanding'. Thistley Hough and St Joseph's College are respected nearby secondary schools, with Newcastle-under-Lyme College offering Further Education provision.

Transport Links

Penkhull is less than a ten-minute drive to junction 15 of the M6 which takes you to Birmingham in the south and provides links to the major cities of the North West. It is located two miles from Newcastle-under-Lyme bus station with its good local connections and just over a mile from Stoke-on-Trent railway station. This provides services to London and Nottingham in around 90 minutes, and Birmingham and Manchester in under an hour; the Stafford service takes around 20 minutes.

Amenities

Although it is close to Newcastle, Penkhull has many good shops and amenities, including a mini supermarket, service station, florist, convenience store and hardware store. There are also friendly pubs, cafes and restaurants in the village. Nearby Wolstanton retail park is home to several big retail names as well as a large supermarket.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, Hartshill Park is a large nature reserve of different habitats, including five ponds. Brampton Park and Gardens offers much to families, including an adventure play park and a museum. A short drive away is award-winning Silverdale Country Park - an 83-hectare open space created on former colliery land, and Apedale Community Country Park, both attracting walkers, cyclists, twitchers and anglers.

Water World is a great day out for families and swimming fanatics. Nearby Hartshill and Newcastle Cricket Club is a lively and long-established part of the community. For golf lovers, Wolstanton Golf club, Keele Driving Range, Trentham Golf Club and Newcastle-under-Lyme Golf Club are nearby. Newcastle Town Football Club plays at the impressive Aspire Stadium and has strong links in the local community.

Penkhull Village Hall provides a hub for the community with space for clubs and gatherings. Penkhull is home to several churches; Saint Thomas Church, Penkhull Christian Fellowship, The Church of God in Stoke-on-Trent and Hartshill Bible Church.

Stoke Health Centre and Foden Street Surgery offer GP provision and the respected Royal Stoke University Hospital is just over a mile away.
