Historic market town

Overview

Newcastle-under-Lyme is a thriving, diverse market town in North Staffordshire, close to the Cheshire and Shropshire borders. It is a few minutes' drive from the city of Stoke-on-Trent and within an hour or so of Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.

There are several large employers in the area; Newcastle council, Royal Stoke University Hospital and Keele university are among the biggest. Because of the area's excellent transport links, several large businesses have headquarters or major distribution centres nearby, including Bet365, Michelin, Vodafone and Premier Foods.

The town's property market is diverse; the town centre is dominated by Victorian terraces and other attractive period properties and there are pockets of 1930s and 1950s housing alongside sympathetically designed modern housing. There is a wide range of flats, apartments and bungalows in the area. The rental market is lively due in no small part to the nearby universities and teaching hospital. Heywoods is Newcastle-under-Lyme's leading independent estate agency; we regularly top the charts on many local agent reports.

The town is surrounded on three sides by beautiful countryside and a wealth of attractive villages. The River Trent and the Mersey Canal provide picturesque walking and cycling routes and there are several country parks and National Trust locations in the area.

Schools and Colleges

Residents in any part of Newcastle-under-Lyme do not have to travel far to send their children to Ofsted-rated 'Good' or 'Outstanding' primary schools. There is a wide choice of secondary schools in the area, the Ofsted 'Good' or 'Outstanding' including:

  • St John Fisher Catholic College
  • Newcastle Academy
  • Thistley Hough
  • Clayton Hall Academy
  • Chesterton Community Sports College
  • St Joseph's College

There is also a number of respected primary and secondary independent schools.

Several of the area's secondary schools offer post-16 education and Newcastle-under-Lyme College is a large, recently refurbished college with excellent facilities and a good success rate.

The wider area is home to Staffordshire University and Keele University.

Transport Links

Newcastle-under-Lyme is minutes from junctions 15 and 16 of the nearby M6. The M6 takes you to Birmingham in the south in around 45 minutes and provides links to the major cities of the North West, including Manchester and Liverpool in around an hour.

Comprehensive rail services run from nearby Stoke-on-Trent; services to London and Nottingham take around 90 minutes; Birmingham, Derby and Manchester take under an hour; the Stafford and Crewe

services take around 20-30 minutes.

The bus station in Newcastle-under-Lyme is a hub for local services; the nearby station in Stoke-on-Trent also runs National Express services.

Amenities

Newcastle has had an outdoor market for over 800 years. This remains the heart of the town and now trades for six days a week in the high street. Shoppers can buy anything from groceries to plants, clothes, jewellery, tools and electronic goods. There are also allocated days for antiques and a farmers' market.

The town centre has a good selection of shops including fashion, home ware, sports and book stores. The town centre and the surrounding area also offer a wide range of cafes, restaurants, pubs and clubs.

Newcastle is home to Europe’s first purpose-built theatre in the round, The New Victoria Theatre. This lively theatre attracts acts and productions from around the UK and the world, and is a key part of the region's cultural life. There are also art galleries in the town, the Brampton Museum and a multiplex cinema.

There are many tourist destinations and attractions in the area, including Alton Towers, Water World, Trentham Gardens, Monkey Forest and several major pottery museums and galleries.

The town is surrounded by rolling hills with nearby award-winning Silverdale Country Park - an 83-hectare open space created on former colliery land, and Apedale Community Country Park, both attracting walkers, cyclists, twitchers and anglers.

Sport is a big part of Newcastle life and this is reflected in the wide range of clubs and venues in and around the town, including a state-of-the-art sports and leisure facility that includes pools, courts, gym and classes. For golf lovers, there are several clubs and ranges in the area including Keele Driving Range, Trentham Golf Club and Newcastle-under-Lyme Golf Club. Lyme Racing Club is one of the largest in the area and is open to cyclists of all ages. Uttoxeter Racecourse is just a 20-minute drive away.

The town is home to Newcastle Town Football Club which plays at the impressive Aspire Stadium in the Northern Premier League First Division South and has strong links in the local community.

Royal Stoke University Hospital is a large, renowned and respected teaching and research hospital, with an Accident and Emergency department, that has recently benefited from a £350 million development. It is in the Hartshill area and is one of the region's major employers.
